Does Your Ego Need a Massage?

It's time for a summer-soaked edition of random musings...

  • According to a survey by ONU, the "work-jerk" behaviors that most irk coworkers are: complaining (48%); gossiping and bullying (32%); annoying eating habits (12%); and poor meeting or email etiquette (6%). (As I wrote in the Jerk-Free Workplace, share these surveys with your team as a gentle reminder to everyone!)
  • If you want to achieve your goals or make a change in your life, experts recommend that rather than visualizing the end result, instead visualize the process it will take to get you to where you want to be.
  • If you want to make sure employees aren't overworking and burning out, it's critical that leaders openly show and communicate when they are signing off for the day (or week) from work.
  • Consider the number of times in your life when something bad happened that actually turned out to be something good. A great technique to help you respond thoughtfully rather than react emotionally to a setback is to take a pause, be curious, and ask, "Is this really a bad thing? Or could it be a good thing? Or is it a case that I just don't know yet?"
  • Set up an "ego massage chair" in your office. Then, as a fun way to recognize an employee (or do it as a prize to a contest), honor the employee by having them sit in the comfy ego massage chair for their entire coffee or lunch break with their favorite refreshing beverage and snack while employees drop around and blatantly massage their egos.

A quick meeting ice breaking question: "If you could have any famous person narrate your life, who would it be?" and/or "If you had to choose someone in this meeting to narrate your life history, who would you choose?"

    Funny Business

The store Obvious Plant stocks its stores with fake products, such as an empty plastic bag containing "Muppet screams," a 1992 travel book titled, "Missouri Sucks - Please Do Not Come Here,"  and an action figure named "Useless Man" who contributes absolutely nothing to society!

If your company sold fake products or services, what would you sell?
