Video Meetings Rules of the Road - Is That Your Dog?

I know we've all been at this for a looooong time, but it appears there are still many people who didn't get the memo when it comes to video meeting etiquette, so why not create a funny Top-10 Video Meeting Tips list or a fun Video Meeting Rules of the Road guide to remind everyone of some basic video meeting etiquette - after all, video meetings aren't going away.

Include some more serious reminders and tips: Close all your other computer windows so you aren't tempted to multi-task; store your smart phone out of reach for the same reason; mute yourself when you're not speaking; say your name before you speak so people know where the mystery voice is coming from; make use of the icons to signal your support for someone or to raise a question.

Then weave in some lighter rules: Beware of UFOs in the background (unidentified funny objects that may be highly embarrassing once they are identified); if your pet walks by be sure to introduce your pet or at least pass along our best wishes; maybe make sure you are dressed before the meeting starts?; put up a "Recording in Progress" sign on your home office door to ensure your shirtless brother-in-law doesn't stumble into the wrong room; make sure your lighting doesn't make you look like you're about to share a scary ghost story; although we all think you have an amazing forehead, please ensure your camera is positioned accordingly.

And as you progress to working in a true hybrid workplace, consider creating
a fun video/hybrid communication guidebook for all your employees and new hires as well.

What "rule" would you make sure you'd include in a handbook? I'd love to hear your serious and not-so-serious suggestions!

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

Today is Tell the Truth Day, so try out the classic meeting icebreaker/team-building game "Two Truths and a Lie" for your next meeting. Each participant lists two truths about themselves and one lie. Participants then have to guess which statement is the lie. If you have too many people you can use the breakout rooms in a video meeting or draw random names and have three people present their truths and lies while everyone else guesses. You can also use this when introducing a guest speaker at your meeting where the special guest has to share two truths and a lie with the entire group.

A few peculiar laws still on the books in the United States, that really make you wonder what the heck happened that created the need for these in the first place!

- In Alabama, it's illegal to drive while blindfolded.

- In Arizona it's illegal for a donkey to sleep in a bathtub.

- In Arkansas you can't honk your horn near a sandwich shop after 9:00 p.m.
