Making a Pitch for a More Inspiring Workplace Culture

It's another lilac-scented, 100% all-natural edition of random musings and ideas...

  • As my friend and fellow speaker Richard Hadden says, "Whenever possible at work, don't measure attendance, measure outcomes." Great advice for anyone working in hybrid workplace.
  • If you are trying to adopt new habits, in addition to creating 'to-do' lists, try creating 'Do NOT lists' as a reminder of the things you need to stop doing.
  • I love this quote I came across in a Harvard Business Review article this week: "If you trusted your employees enough to hire them, trust them to do their work when and where they want."
  • As I wrote in The Jerk-Free Workplace: It's not always easy, but if you want to create an environment conducive to honest feedback, and if you want to be seen as a leader at work, make it a habit to thank people when they offer you feedback. Remember, as much as you may not always enjoy getting critical feedback, most people feel equally uncomfortable giving it!
  • I love this idea: One company holds a "pitch day" every quarter where employees or teams can pitch one idea to senior leaders that will improve their workplace culture.
  • I would be remiss (and who wants that?) if I didn't point out that today, May 12, is International Nurses Day! Please join me in thanking all the nurses out there who have been under so much stress on the front lines of the pandemic. We owe you our thanks and our gratitude!

Here's a meeting ice breaker for your next virtual/in-person meeting that also can remind everyone of some best practices. Have everyone fill in the blanks:

"When we're in a meeting (or on Zoom) I LOVE it when _____ and it drives me CRAZY when ________."

A little humor always makes people stop and take notice. Here's some humor on a sandwich sign in front of a coffee shop:

NO HIPSTERS!

Don't be coming in here with your hairy faces, vegan diets, your tiny feet and your sawdust bedding. No wait...that's hamsters!

NO HAMSTERS!
