    Workplace Fun Shouldn't Be Punishment!

It's time for a pomegranate-scented edition of random musings and ideas:

  • One of my clients does stand up meetings twice a week with no agenda. They limit the meeting to 15 minutes, but the agenda arises organically from the participants.
  • A study reported in Forbes showed that when bosses check in with employees on a regular basis, even when it's not work-related whatsoever, trust and morale increases - a lot!
  • Research by Eric Mosley, the CEO of Workhuman, found that when employees were asked what they'd change about their culture, the #1 response was this: They would create a culture of appreciation for who they are and what they do along with a culture of mutual respect from top to bottom.
  • Be wary of implementing programs that might be viewed as "funishment" by employees: Activities that are supposed to be fun, but really feel like painful obligations for too many employees. If you're not sure, ask! Do anonymous surveys. And get involvement from the naysayers.
  • As a way to boost productivity, more and more companies are setting aside one "meeting-less" day a week where no meetings are allowed. You can take this initiative on your own as well, and set aside a day of the week where you don't book any appointments or meetings.

Here's a fun virtual video meeting exercise: Give everyone 30 seconds to grab something blue, something you can eat or drink, something you can wear, and something you were gifted, without leaving the view of their camera! You can, of course, get creative with your request topics and create your own categories. Reward a prize for the person who is able to retrieve all of the requested objects without leaving their chair or to the person who amasses the most creative collection.

I'm not sure this is the best timing to be marketing this product, but an observant subscriber sent me a photo of a sign reading:
