3 Ways to Strengthen Your Culture This Year

In last week's pine-scented edition I offered up some simple resolutions to help you maintain a healthier outlook this year, but what about resolving to make your workplace culture better than ever? Here are 3 ideas that will help you focus on, and improve, your workplace culture.

1. Create a monthly theme related to some aspect of your culture that everyone can rally around. It might be a theme related to one of your core values, a specific aspect of your customer service, or any work-related habit you want everyone to commit to. You can also pose the themes as questions: "What can we do this month to appreciate each other better?" or "How can we follow up with customers more effectively?"

2. Use the Wheel of Change framework every 90 days. Have a team meeting every 90 days where you agree to just one habit everyone commits to START doing, STOP doing, and KEEP doing that will strengthen your culture.

3. Close every meeting out with a "culture moment" where participants are invited to share a success story, offer kudos to a fellow "culture champion," or share an interesting idea from a workplace that is doing something innovative.

A fun meeting icebreaker that works well with virtual video meetings: "Love it or loathe it?" Run through a series of rapid-fire, non-controversial items and get people to vote on whether they love it or loathe it. Use signs, thumbs up/thumbs down, or whatever creative means you can think of to register the votes. If you're not on video you can always use the chat box. Topics might include things like, "Pineapple on pizzas?," "Star Wars movies?" and "Brussels sprouts?"

The Just Scream hotline is now available for anyone who wants to phone in, wait for the beep, and yes, SCREAM! The screams are uploaded onto their website, so you also have the option of listening to a wide range of random screams, if that's more your bag. It was created, according to the website, by "a teacher, occasional artist, and generally rather quiet person." The hotline and site is only available until January 21st, after which time we'll presumably have to go back to screaming into our pillows - and preferably not at each other!

The Jerk-Free Workplace: How You Can Take the Lead to Create a Happier, More Inspiring Workplace. The Jerk-Free Workplace will be available as a soft-cover book or ebook as of February 8th.

If your company purchases 25 or more copies (the book is written for any employee, at any level) then you'll be able to take advantage of me - in a good way! I'm offering a free virtual "meet the author"/ Q & A for any company that purchases 25 or more copies! And yes, we have bulk discount pricing available for the print version of the book.

"If I could have given this book to myself 10 years ago, I know I would have made the culture around me even better than it is - and it is really good right now! There are SO many great ideas on how to step up as a leader to take your workplace to new heights. Anyone who wants to make a difference in their workplace needs to read this book!"
