    Why Bringing Your Manners to Work Matters - A Lot!

This Friday, September 4th, is official Bring Your Manners to Work Day. It seems like a simple request, I mean come on people, it's just one day a year! You've got the entire rest of the year to act like a jerk!

I josh, of course (it's just how I roll). You really ought to encourage everyone to bring their manners to work everyday, since study after study suggests incivility at work is on the rise, and jerk-like behavior might be costing you more than you realize. An Arizona State University study discovered that disrespectful behavior at work resulted in:
  • 80% of employees reporting lost work time worrying about an incident;
  • 63% of employees losing time at work trying to avoid the offender;
  • 50% of employees saying they've deliberately decreased time at work due to disrespectful behavior;
  • 66% saying their performance declined because of a work jerk;
  • 25% admitting to taking it out on a customer;
  • 12% of respondents saying they left a job because of incivility.
Incivility at work impacts morale, innovation, collaboration, and customer service. Plus it's a huge source of stress that is costing you big bucks. So, once again, but with feeling: Don't hire jerks! Train employees so they understand the costs of incivility. Keep the conversation around workplace civility alive. And implement a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to jerks at work!

A quick icebreaker: At your next meeting have everyone describe where they were born using only food items.

It's a bit of an older story but I came across it again on my news feed, yet I think it's just the kind of story we need to share these days. Alfred "Alfie" Date passed away at 110-years-old, but up until his death this Australian gentleman spent his spare time knitting adorable little sweaters for orphaned penguins! This has to be one of the cutest headlines ever! (This story really ought to be made into a movie starring Bill Nighy and a team of adorable penguins.)
