    Creating a Culture of Helping

The international design and consulting company IDEO, lauded for its innovation, has built what they describe as a "culture of helping." Researchers spent two years studying how IDEO builds this approach into their culture and they found that the two most important factors contributing to the success of the most popular helpers were accessibility and trust.

Their culture of helping starts on day one, when new employees are taught that one of IDEO's core values that they will be assessed on is a commitment to making other teammates successful. Senior leaders constantly communicate how collaborative helping leads to greater outcomes than internal competition. They emphasize the role of helping in all job descriptions and they even assign official helpers on projects. This culture of collaborative helping not only drives their legendary innovation, it's also the reason they have such exceptionally high employee morale.

Thanks to long time subscriber and frequent caller Waldo for the inspiration for this one. Use a random name generator or just have people draw names from a hat (perhaps a virtual hat these days) and then have each person write a note of appreciation to that person and exchange notes with them. Waldo shared with me how he used this technique to ease tensions during a stressful time when he was teaching a class to adults, and this simple exercise proved to be a powerful turning point for the entire class.
