A study cited in the Journal of Management Research found that an individual's use of humor results in more humor by the entire group, leading to greater trust and collaboration. A fun, simple way to encourage more collaborative humor, according to leadership expert Brian Harman, PhD, is to ask unusual questions. Asking quirky questions helps grease the humor in
any group interaction in an organic way and makes it easy for everyone to contribute some humor. For example:
Instead of asking, "Do you think this project is in trouble? ask everyone, "What would Batman do right now about this situation?"
Instead of asking colleagues how their weekend was, ask, "What movie title or song best represents how your weekend was?"
Instead of, "How do you think this meeting is going?" ask, "How would kindergartners view our meeting?"
Speaking of kindergartners, this technique works fabulous well with family and friends as well! Yes, even teenagers.
