    Collaborative Humor at Work

A study cited in the Journal of Management Research found that an individual's use of humor results in more humor by the entire group, leading to greater trust and collaboration. A fun, simple way to encourage more collaborative humor, according to leadership expert Brian Harman, PhD, is to ask unusual questions. Asking quirky questions helps grease the humor in any group interaction in an organic way and makes it easy for everyone to contribute some humor. For example:

Instead of asking, "Do you think this project is in trouble? ask everyone, "What would Batman do right now about this situation?"

Instead of asking colleagues how their weekend was, ask, "What movie title or song best represents how your weekend was?"

Instead of, "How do you think this meeting is going?" ask, "How would kindergartners view our meeting?"

Speaking of kindergartners, this technique works fabulous well with family and friends as well!  Yes, even teenagers.

Thank you Kaeli for passing this along: To help navigate the transition from an office-based culture to a virtual culture, the business software company Jobber has created what they call Virtual Moments of Happiness - things they can do to encourage virtual interactions. One recent VMH had everyone on their team place a pin on a virtual Google map showing where their hometown is, while offering up a fun fact about their home town. It was a fun way for colleagues to get to know each other a wee bit better.

Perhaps you saw this in the news, but it really has to be one of my favorite news headlines of the summer: Nudist Chases Wild Boar and Piglets Who Stole His Laptop.

And in case you're wondering, yes, photos do accompany the story.
