Why Trust at Work is a More Precious Commodity Than Ever

When it comes to creating an inspiring workplace culture, trust is paramount. When trust in the workplace goes awol stress increases, productivity slumps, honest communication is stifled, and creativity and innovation collapses when you need it the most. And yes, work becomes far less fun. In fact, work can become a soul-sucking, fun-sucking Dilbert-like quagmire! And with so much uncertainty, and with so many employees still working at home for the first time, trust is a more precious and fragile commodity than ever.
  • Be extra cautious about what words and behaviors might be eroding trust right now and what you need to do to maintain trust with your colleagues and customers.
  • Talk about the "trust factor" and how your team is managing it: Have a frank conversation about trust in your meetings and during your one-on-one discussions with your supervisor.
  • Communicate relentlessly to maintain trust, but establish parameters and guidelines around how you communicate (Do I REALLY need to answer my boss's text on a Sunday evening?)
  • Be even more intentional about being relationship-focused, not just task-focused.
  • With people working from home, shift to measuring outcomes, not time. This is a big shift for many, but it's something effective leaders have done for years.
  • Don't abandon your employees or colleagues - make sure they have the support they need.
  • But...don't micromanage them either! If you catch yourself thinking, "How do I know what my employees are up to every minute of the day?" I'd challenge you with this thought: "Did you know what they were up to every minute of the day before all this?"

Thank you Bren de Leeuw from the Excellence in Manufacturing Consortium for passing along this idea. It's a weekly challenge that gets passed from person to person via email so that remote/field workers can feel connected to the main office employees and everyone can learn a bit more about one another. Whoever leads the challenge on a given week chooses who takes the lead for the following week. The weekly challenges have included, "Best song ever?"; "What games do you like to play?"; "Share a photo of yourself from high school" and "Most watched TV show?".
