    A Cup of Mindfulness

Last week my brilliant friend Dr. Lisa Belanger released her book, A Cup of Mindfulness For the Busy & Restless. The timing couldn't be better for this quick read, as I suspect many of you are suffering from massive amounts of squirrel brain these days. (Fun fact, as I was writing this sentence a literal, real life squirrel ran by my window momentarily distracting me. Now, where was I...)

Ah yes, mindfulness! Mindfulness is simply about being fully present and being aware of where we focus our attention. As Lisa writes, where we choose to place our attention is one of our most precious currencies in life - we either control our thoughts or our thoughts control us.

The book sums up the myriad of benefits linked to mindfulness: less stress and higher productivity; improved mental health; lower absenteeism rates; lower health care costs; improved workplace safety; and stronger relationships. Being more mindful can help you be more empathetic and regulate your emotions so you can react to difficult people better, and just as importantly, prevent you from becoming the difficult person!

The book offers up lots of simple ways to practice mindfulness anywhere and anytime, if even just for a minute or two. It can be as simple as sitting still and focusing on your breathing for a few minutes;  being fully present and focusing on all five senses when you savor a cup of coffee; being aware of your thoughts while you are in the shower, or practicing mindful walking so you aren't on autopilot.

And yup, it can even help you focus on your writing when an actual squirrel taunts you outside your office window.

Last week we had the Ugly Shirt virtual theme meeting, this week why not get your nerd on to honor Nerd Pride Day (May 25th). Have everyone dress up as their nerdiest selves for a virtual meeting and award a pocket protector (or some other appropriate prize) to the best dressed nerd.

Here's another great example of a company slipping in some surprising humor. A label on a bag of protein powder reads: "Please don't look under the bag!" Of course, when you do look under the bag there's a label reading: "Quite the rule breaker aren't you? We dig that!"
