    Recognize YOUR Local Heroes

We need to appreciate each other, recognize each other, and celebrate the great work everyone is doing now more than ever!
  • Most of you have completely upended your normal work routine in a ridiculously short time frame, so remember to intentionally thank one another for stepping up so quickly!
  • Open or end your virtual meetings with a 'moment of appreciation' where everyone can recognize one team member - even if they aren't on the call.
  • Create some simple, fun ways to celebrate milestones, even if it's just a Friday "Made it to the End of Another Week Working From Home" milestone each week.
  • It's easy to overlook colleagues' birthdays or other events you'd normally celebrate, so assign someone to keep track of upcoming events and look for creative ways to celebrate them. Some fire departments are doing drive by birthday celebration greetings from small children in their communities. Now, you probably don't want to steal a fire truck, but how about recording a Zoom rendition of 'Happy Birthday' with each team member contributing one word at a time!
  • Create some fun awards that will help get you through the next few months. The Houdini Award for whoever magically made a big problem disappear; a Ha Ha Award for whoever kept everyone laughing; an I Got Your Back Award for whoever best looked out for each other's well-being; a Home Alone Award to whoever adapted to working from home the best...
  • Don't forget to appropriately (no hugging allowed!) thank your local support team as well: Your family, your neighbors, your local grocery workers, your local artists who donated their time to share their art, your local healthcare workers, cleaners, truckers, teachers trying to make things work remotely... and on and on and on. In fact, why not consider doing what many businesses are doing and come up with a creative way to recognize your local heroes on behalf of your entire team or organization.

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

Tomorrow, April 16, is a day that many of you have probably already been practicing, but tomorrow it's actually official! Yup, it's Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day! Now, for those of you new to the home office scene, I'm a big proponent of having a well-defined structure, and, well, putting on clothes, in order to help me function in a disciplined, professional manner. But I think tomorrow is the ideal excuse to hold a virtual team meeting with everyone showing off their PG-rated PJs. Not only will it add some much-needed fun to your meeting, it will definitely help humanize everyone as well!

Yes, this was an actual newspaper headline:
