Workplace Culture Matters Now More Than Ever!

It's time for another edition of random ideas and musings...
  • According to a report by the American Psychological Association, 75% of Americans say that their boss is the most stressful part of the day. Here's a great idea - don't be that boss!
  • People who relate experiences to colleagues and who prefer experiences over materialistic possessions are considered twice as humorous as materialistic people.
  • The company 1-800-Got Junk has fostered what they call a "Blame-Free Culture." What would a blame-free culture do for your workplace? How would you create such a culture?
  • To ensure their employees don't burnout, Pixar technical employees must get permission to work beyond their allotted hours per week (40-50 hours/week).
  • According to a survey reported last week in Fast Company, 88% of respondents said companies that supported and truly cared for their employees during this time will be preferred employers in the future. Companies with strong cultures bounced back far sooner than other companies after other economic downturns such as the 2008 financial crisis, so now is without a doubt the time to invest in your culture and be even more intentional about your culture. It's easy to live your values when times are rocking, it's during times like these that your values will be tested, when customers and colleagues will be watching to make sure your actions back up your words, and when living up to your values will help you get through this - maybe even stronger than you were before!

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

Since some of you may have the time in your business right now to tweak your website or online shopping cart, why not look for ways to surprise your customers with a little quirky fun and get some free publicity all in one swoop...or search.

If you visit the website for O'Reilly Auto Parts, then enter item 121g in their search box, you will be taken to a page featuring the totally fictional Flux Capacitor Time Machine featured in the movie Back to the Future. This quirky addition to their website, along with a "secret code" feature garnered them free publicity in dozens of newspapers and countless websites worldwide! So what fun service or product could you add to your website to entice people your way?

    It's a Wacky World

I love how creative some businesses have become in such a short time to adapt to their new reality and not let this whole situation get their goat. So, yup, courtesy of the Silicon Valley animal sanctuary, Sweet Farm, you can use their "Goat-2-Meeting" service to invite a goat or llama to sit in on your next business Zoom meeting. The money goes to a good cause and you get to tell your family that a llama attended your meeting, because, seriously, how awesome would that be. If you don't do this I fear you'll llament it for the rest of your life! I know, so baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad.
