May the Farce Be With You Every Day

"We promote fun and laughter on a daily basis!"

This is one of the core values of the billion dollar tech company Convirgint. Founded in 2001, the company was built on a foundation of humor as a core principle. The founders believed that if the senior leadership team invested in creating a culture steeped in fun and camaraderie, a winning business strategy would follow. And based on their phenomenal growth, they were right!

To help create their culture, they decided on five values based on what the company would commit to (detailed in five 'we' statements) and five values expressing what individual employees would be willing to commit to (expressed in five 'I' statements).

When it comes to adding fun into the mix, the leaders definitely model their values out loud. If you check out the photos posted on the culture page of their website you can see how much fun they bring to work (bringing your culture to life through photos is a great thing to do, incidentally). The leadership team has dressed up as crew members of the Star Trek Enterprise and once showed up at work on a family fun day dressed as Alice Cooper, Obi-Wan Kenobe and the Cookie Monster!

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

Add "Fishbowl Fridays" to your workplace. Have a large fishbowl (okay, so a large hat or bucket works, but then you lose out on the alliteration!) where employees toss in names on slips of paper of any coworker who did something particularly memorable or exceeded their expectations for internal customer service. Then, each Friday afternoon, have a draw from the fishbowl and recognize the winning draw with a small, fun prize. It's an easy and fun way to remind everyone to appreciate their coworkers, and encourage everyone to be more service-focused and thoughtful with their workplace interactions.
