      Five Culture-Building Questions

The talent acquisition software company Greenhouse earned the 2017 #1 Best Place to Work slot in a ranking of great workplaces by Glassdoor. Why? Simply put, they were intentional about building a great workplace culture, and to help them define the culture they wanted to have, the company founders asked themselves these five questions:
  • What kind of company do we want to be?
  • What values do we care about?
  • How do we make that happen?
  • How does that show up in the first day of orientation, the way we hire, how we manage our people, in all-hands meetings, and the way we pay our workers?
  • How do we make our values come alive?
Once they answered these questions in meaningful ways, the leaders focused relentlessly on getting their hiring right and holding employees (and themselves) accountable for living their values our loud. And to stress the importance of their culture and their values, the founder of the company attends every new-hire orientation so new employees understand how important the new employees and their culture are to the success of the company.

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

Macon Funeral Home in Franklin, North Carolina, has added a new employee to their team: Mochi, an adorable 8-week-old Bernese Mountain dog is being trained to serve as an emotional support dog.  What a fabulous idea! I've written about the trend of pet-friendly workplaces to create a more positive work environment, but what about having an official pet ambassador for your customers? Fairmont Hotels has received a lot of accolades over the years for their "canine hotel ambassadors" that guests can even take out for a walk. Now, if you can't include a live animal ambassador, you can always do what one business has done: Their unofficial customer ambassador is a large stuffed penguin, and yes, he's a huge hit with the customers' kids!

I'm curious about the history that led to the creation of this sign for Loretta's Bakery in New Orleans:

No alcohol
No profanity
No smoking
No nudity
No penguins
