Shaking Off the 3:00 PM Cobwebs

It's time for a gingerbread-scented edition of random thoughts and ideas...

  • There's a hot new buzzword in town: AQ or adaptability quotient - the ability to overcome challenges, make a conscious effort to change, discard obsolete knowledge, and understand what's most relevant.
  • 11% of survey respondents said they quit a job in order to avoid having a difficult conversation! (Why wouldn't you just hide in a closet like a normal person?)
  • The HR software company Workday holds a semi-annual "Spelunking Conference" where employees share lessons learned from project failures.
  • Attivo Networks assigns a "champion" to mentor every new hire, which helps them sustain an impressive 93% annual employee retention rate.
  • Employees at WeTransfer get one "Innovative Friday" per month where they can work on any project of their choosing.
  • One of my clients has a 3:00 pm "dance party" tradition where every day at 3:00 a different team member gets to choose one song that everybody gets up and dances to as a way to re-energize the team. And yes, it's totally optional, so if you didn't bring your dancing shoes you are welcome to sit it out!

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

Here's a fun way to remember and appreciate the positive things that happen at work: Whenever anything good happens, encourage everyone to write the good moment down on a slip of paper and place it in a "Happy Moments" jar. Then, depending on how frequently you meet or how frequently the jar gets filled, at the end of every week or the end of every month, take a few minutes to read the entries out loud as a celebratory reminder of all the good things that happened. This is a great thing to do with your kids at home as well!

“There are two kinds of people, those who do the work and those who take the credit. Try to be in the first group; there is less competition there." Indira Gandhi
