  Friday, October 4 is official Improve Your Office Day, so why not get your team together (even if it's just a team of one) and brainstorm simple ways to improve your office? Maybe it's time to refresh the artwork, upgrade the coffee maker, install a popcorn machine, or implement a no-scent policy (dang,
I was just starting to get excited about the popcorn machine). For some inspiration, here are a few ideas one of my clients generated at a workshop recently:
  • Adopt an official office dog or cat
  • Bring in a barista every Friday
  • Bring in more live plants
  • Have board games available for lunch
  • Paint a wall mural as a team event
  • Put up a humor bulletin board
  • Bring in a massage chair
  • Name everything (hallways, elevators, photocopy machines) quirky names
  • Put up a "kudos shout out" board
  • Create a "Ministry of Silly Walks" hallway
  • Create a "quiet zone"
  • Have a giant mascot representing one of our top values

Carrying on with the office improvement theme, companies such as DreamWorks and Etsy offer a modest budget to new hires to help them personalize their workstations in fun ways. Research cited in the book,The Best Place to Work, found a 32% increase in performance among employees who were allowed to customize their office; conversely employees that weren't allowed to customize their office space were typically the least happy in their jobs.
