      Appreciation for Checking In

It's time for another pine-infused edition of random ideas and musings...
  • Create a "Wall of Appreciation" somewhere in your office where employees can publicly acknowledge who they want to appreciate and why.
  • Create a virtual "Wall of Appreciation" on your website where your customers can share their appreciation for an employee in a public way.
  • A recent study featured in the International Journal of Humor Research found that although it's possible that self-defeating humor (where you put yourself down in order to ingratiate yourself with others) can be harmful when overdone, for most people laughing at their shortcomings is a proven coping mechanism that tends to make people happier. (Remember, when you learn to laugh at yourself...you'll never run out of things to laugh at!)
  • Here are a few great questions for your team to mull over: How will you know you are making progress when it comes to improving your workplace culture or team performance? What are the red flags to watch for that might indicate you are backsliding; what "green flags" will indicate you are on the right track and moving in the right direction?
  • An Ernst and Young study found that 40% of employees felt the greatest sense of belonging at work when colleagues simply took the time to check in with them. So take the time to check in with someone at work today!

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

Create a fun tradition to celebrate employees' birthdays. The Ontario-based tech company 360insights celebrates employees' birthdays for the upcoming week every Friday morning where everyone gets treats and the birthday employees have to wear an "awkward hat" until noon in order to earn their free birthday lunch.

    It's a Wacky World

The world's first heavy metal knitting championships has been announced! Yup, this July you can take your knitting needles and love of headbanger music to Joensuu, Finland, where you can knit to the beat of heavy metal music. Participants are encouraged to show off their best knitting/headbanger moves because, well, I'm really not sure...evidently this is filling a much-needed void in either the knitting community or the headbanger community.
