      How Are You REALLY Doing?

One of my clients holds a daily ritual at the start of each day where everyone on their team publicly announces how they are feeling on a scale of 1-10 (and yes, decimals are allowed). They do this to remind everyone to be conscious of their attitude and of the fact that they can hit the "reset" button and choose a new attitude going forward. They also do this exercise to identify anyone who is genuinely having a lousy start to their day so that everyone avoid that person. I kid, of course. The real reason they do this is so they can identify anyone who needs support from the rest of the team, because that's what true teammates do for one another.

You can also try this 1-10 exercise with your teammates, spouse, or children at the end of their work or school day. And studies suggest that when people give a low answer ("My day sucked Mom, I'm a 1.5"), simply asking them, "Why such a low rating?" causes most people to reassess their day upwardly. They'll remember some things that went well, almost always leading to a higher rating upon reflection.

To remind employees of their core values, one of my clients holds a "Wear Your Heart on Your Sleeve" theme day each summer where everyone is encouraged to dress in a way that visually expresses one of their five corporate values. Throughout the day employees try to guess the link between what people are wearing and one of their values. Prizes are also awarded for creativity.

"If you lose one sense your other senses are enhanced. That’s why people with no sense of humor have a heightened sense of self-importance."  Anonymous

As seen on a sign at Liberty Distilleries on Granville Island, Vancouver:

"Is everything okay?"

Yes? Come in for a drink!
No? Come in for a drink!
