      Live Happy, Work Happy

It's time for another mocha-flavored edition of random ideas and musings...
  • According to a concept known as "target chuting," when you ask if people are unhappy with something they will find things to confirm their unhappiness and omit things that are going well. So when you're talking about workplace issues, be careful how you frame discussions - use a "yes, and" approach by asking what's working well and what can be done to make things work even better in the future.
  • A consulting company blows up photos of their clients and/or remote employees, puts them on large poster boards, then positions them in their conference room to make their remote guests feel like they are with them in person when they connect via video. Clients and employees love the personalized and fun touch!
  • Here's why the mantra "catching customer service concerns on the inside" matters: According to research cited in the book, Strategic Customer Service, a customer who complains and is then satisfied with how the complaint is dealt with is 30% more loyal than non-complaining customers, and 50% more loyal than customers who complain but remain dissatisfied!
  • You may want to check out the smartphone app Live Happy, which encourages users to engage in simple daily practices, such as counting gratitudes. Use of the app has been positively correlated to greater happiness in the users who actually, you know, use it.
  • A simple, proven way to prime meeting participants to be more creative before a brainstorming session is to start by simply asking everyone if they consider themselves to be adventurous and open-minded!

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

It's official Discover What Your Name Means Day today so why not use this as your next meeting icebreaker and have everyone share what their first and/or last name means. Or, have everyone wear a "Hello My Name is_____" name tag for a day and have everyone write down a few words describing what their name means. The people who don't know can be creative and make up what they think their name means...or what they would want it to mean in their wildest dreams!

    Quote of the Week

“However full of stars a team is – a movie team, a football team – if those stars are too full of their own importance to work as a team, they are going to be beaten by a weaker side that has learnt to work together."  Michael Caine
