      Uncanny Customer Service

Do you need to can your canned customer service - customer service that sounds prepackaged, scripted, and totally devoid of personality? You know what I'm talking about - those Arctic-chilled frozen smiles coupled with totally insincere-sounding questions or comments that you know came out of a customer service recipe book.

Great service is about building trust and fostering relationships, which means being truly present and authentic in your interactions with customers. It's why Southwest Airlines and WestJet Airlines encourages their flight attendants to put their own personal, humorous takes (within limits) on their announcements - leading to hundreds of viral videos!

The online shoe giant Zappos also gives their call center employees the latitude to bring their personalities along for the ride. Zappos' employees receive a lot of training, coaching, and feedback to make sure they are engaging customers in professional and effective ways, but how they build trust with the customer is largely left up to the employee - which leads to happier, more engaged customers and employees.
