      Rewarding Your Rewarding Breaks

It's another spring-infused edition of random musings and ideas...
  • The next time you're in a potentially awkward conversation with your boss, teenager, spouse or colleague, instead of asking them "Why?" when you don't understand something they've said, simply say, "Tell me more." It's less threatening and helps keep you in a mindset of curiosity rather than judgement.
  • As a way to prevent employee burnout, the Denver-based software company FullContact pays employees a bonus IF they take their vacation and completely disconnect from work while on holidays. Seems odd that we need to reward ourselves for, well, rewarding ourselves, but what could you do to reward yourself for rewarding yourself with a proper break from work?
  • A study cited in the book, 59 Seconds - Think a Little, Change a Lot, suggests that people who sit in the middle of a meeting table make a better impression on other people.
  • 75% of people can reach their smart phones without moving their feet a whopping 24 hours a day. If you want to build more exercise into your workday, reduce distractions and lower your stress level, intentionally place your your phone out of reach throughout the day.
  • Three proven ways to immediately shift your emotions: smile for thirty seconds, walk in an exaggerated way (with your arms swinging), and sit up straighter in your chair.

To help generate conversations and encourage people to learn more about each other, have a day a month where everyone wears a label reading,"Ask Me About ______." Encourage everyone to put down something either personal or work-related that they are passionate about.

“Humor is by far the most significant behavior of the human brain. Humor shows how perceptions set up one way can be reconfigured in another way. This is the essence of creativity.” Edward de Bono

Carrying on with our weird job series, here's a doozy: Underwater pizza deliverer. Yup, you can order pizza at an underwater hotel in Florida, delivered to you via a scuba diver carrying an airtight case.
