Flex Your Funny Bone...Or Lose It!

It's time for another lime-infused edition of random musings and ideas:
  • Research shows that if you aren't actively working on a given skill, you are probably getting worse at that skill over time! So what are you doing to actively work on the things that are important to you in your career and life?
  • Today is official "Inane Voicemail Message Day" - so why not use the occasion as a reminder to add some ongoing humor to your voicemail message?
  • My wife will be the first to tell you that sometimes I need to slow down when I'm having a crazy day. This might be good advice for you as well. According to one study, "rushers" in the workplace fuel anxiety and stress throughout an office in a significant way - so be aware of the impact you may be having the next time you ramp up into warp speed!
  • The next time you're stressed out about something, try what a "long lens" re-framing approach by asking yourself if this issue is going to matter a year from now?
  • Two professors at Stanford University are teaching a course called Leading With Laughter, because they see a growing need and desire for the topic.Their research suggests that your sense of humor is like a muscle that gets stronger the more you use it. They recommend incorporating levity throughout your day into casual conversations and email correspondence to help you continually strengthen your funny bone.

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

One company I know enlists one of their own employees (a budding amateur photographer) to roam their hallways and offices for a half a day once every year to capture impromptu, fun photos of all the employees at work. They then use the photos to create a montage slideshow titled "A Day in the Life of Us." The photos also get used in a myriad of ways, from wall displays to adding some fun to their website and intranet site.
