The Powerful Impact of Checking In

One of the ways to build a more rocking workplace culture is to make sure you don't put up with jerk-like behavior. Banning jerkiness seems like a reasonable starting point, but better still, you need to encourage everyone to do the simple things - to practice small, positive gestures intentionally and consistently, such as simply asking the question, "How are you?".

A 2017 workplace survey by the American Psychological Association found that employees who felt supported by their managers were more than twice as satisfied in their jobs. This mirrors similar findings from several large companies that found that the most effective leaders were those that actively demonstrated they cared about their employees as real human beings beyond just the employee who shows up for 8 hours to work every day.

Along those same lines, Ernst and Young found than 40% of employees feel the greatest sense of belonging and happiness at work when colleagues took the time to sincerely check in with them by simply asking, "How are you?".

Making a difference in your workplace doesn't get much simpler than that!

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

A simple but effective tradition to build into your meetings is to have everyone at every meeting answer this question in rapid succession: "What makes me happy at work is __________________________?". It doesn't matter if people answer the same way every meeting, even if it's every week! Asking and answering that question can become a simple way of reinforcing positive values and behaviors in your workplace, a reminder of what's going well at work, and an opportunity to express gratitude for the great things that are happening on your team.

This Friday is official Espresso Day, so in honor of that auspicious occasion, here's a new word for you that I recently learned:

"Depresso": That awful feeling you get when you've run out of coffee!
