      Unexpected Treats Make a Difference

It's another pumpkin-infused edition of random musings and ideas...
  • According to a study, 50% of all emails have a tonal issue, as in 50% of the time people don't know how to accurately interpret the tone of an e-mail they receive.Take the egad out of email by taking the time to pick up the phone or better still, talk in person!
  • Small gestures, coupled with something unexpected, can make a difference.Tips at a New Jersey restaurant rose by 3.3% when diners were offered a chocolate; tips rose by 14.1% when they were offered two chocolates; they rose by 21.3% when they were offered one chocolate, then offered the second one by unexpectedly returning to the table with the second one!
  • Marriage counselors John and Julie Gottman say that it only takes them 15 minutes to accurately predict whether or not a married couple will stay together, based on the ratio of positive to negative interactions between the couple. A 5:1 positive to negative ratio suggests the marriage will last. So, what's the ratio of positive to negative comments on your team?
  • According to a Gallup poll half of 12 factors connected to employee retention relate to employees feeling valued, including being praised regularly, having someone at work who encourages their development, and having someone at work who simply cares about their well-being.
  • One of my clients has an "accountability partnership" board in their office, where people can post work or personal goals and find a partner to either mentor them or help hold each other accountable.
  • It's official Knock Knock Joke Day. Please celebrate accordingly!
