Eight Weeks to a Healthier Outlook

It's time for another pumpkin-infused edition of random musings and ideas...
  • A University of Utrecht study found that switching to a bike commute could add as much as 3-14 months to your life expectancy. (Unless you're me and your next commute is 5,089 km long!)
  • Robert A. Emmons, a professor at the University of California, found that people who intentionally practice more gratitude in their lives are happier, more helpful, more forgiving, more alert, and more enthusiastic!
  • A Crowne Plaza Hotel I recently stayed at had a fun touch point on their hotel room notepads: At the bottom of each notepad page there was a box set aside labeled "Doodling". As a chronic doodler, I appreciated the support!
  • A study from Harvard Business Report suggests you can get more employees interested in leadership training if you frame the training as "learning leadership skills" vs. "becoming a leader." Focusing on leadership skills instead of what it takes to "become a leader" is seen as more motivating and less intimidating for participants.
  • Rod Martin, a professor at Western University in London, Ontario, and author of The Psychology of Humor, has found that people with a positive sense of humor tend to have higher levels of self-esteem and self-worth, and are more positive in the face of challenging events and stress. Similarly, a study conducted in Australia found that individuals who took an eight-week humor course scored significantly higher three months later than participants in a control group or participants in a social group, when it came to their emotional well-being, while at the same time their perceived stress and anxiety levels decreased. So yes, you can learn to grow your sense of humor, and yes, it really can make a substantial difference in your life!

It's Bring Your Teddy Bear to Work Day today. According to a survey by Travelodge, 25% of adult men bring a teddy bear with them when they travel. Who knew that's what's inside all that oversized carry-on luggage?
