      Where are Your Priorities?

Inc. magazine polled executives at six hundred companies, asking them to guess what percentage of their employees could name the top three priorities in their company. The executives predicted 64% of employees would know their priorities, but it turned out only a dismal 2% of their employees knew what the top priorities were! Ouch. How do you think your workplace would fare? I'd challenge you to do a similar poll, and if you do, please let me know the results!

Inspiring workplaces and leaders are passionate about making sure everyone understands why their company exists and where they are headed. They tell and retell stories that connect employees to their purpose. They use every speech, every meeting, and every opportunity to hammer their priorities home. They paint their purpose and priorities on their walls, carve it into stone (literally), and tattoo it to their foreheads (okay, this may be a slight exaggeration). They use artifacts, such as giant-sized objects or sculptures, to constantly remind employees of their priorities and reinforce the importance of their overarching purpose.

Whether it's a relentless obsession with exceptional customer service, workplace safety, or innovation, what are you doing at a personal level to remind yourself why you go to work each day? And what is your team doing to make sure your purpose and priorities are so ingrained you can almost see them tattooed on each other's forehead?

Friday, June 1st is official Leave the Office Early Day (you may or may not want to check in with the boss on this one), which reminds me of a theme day one of my clients holds: Fishbowl Fridays. Everyone's name goes into a fishbowl and each Friday they draw one name to see who gets released from their office fishbowl early. They continue until everyone's had a chance and then all the names go back into the fishbowl. It's a great theme day to try out at least for the summer!

    Quote of the Week

“Give a good idea to a mediocre team and they’ll find a way to screw it up. Give a mediocre idea to a good team, and they’ll find a way to make it better. The goal needs to be to get the team right.” Ed Catmull, Pixar
