      Thinking Like a Bronze Medalist

Another inspiring Olympics has come and gone. As I watched many of the medal ceremonies, I looked closely at the faces of the silver and bronze medalists. Although this is completely unscientific, their faces often seemed to reflect the findings of a 1995 study by the American psychologist Thomas Gilovich. Gilovich coauthored a study that examined the relative happiness of the bronze and silver medalists at the 1992 Summer Olympics. Based on video footage, subjects consistently judged the bronze medalist winners to be happier than the silver medalists. Why? Because the silver medalists were focused on what they lost, whereas the bronze medalists were thrilled to have just made it onto the podium.

It's a great reminder of how your internal talk shapes your reactions to events. It's also a reminder of how humor can help you reframe things when you think like a bronze medalist and wildly exaggerate (and that's the key to get you laughing) how something could have been worse, instead of regretting how things could have gone better.

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

Today is Inconvenience Yourself Day, but it's not as bad as it sounds. It's a day to embrace how we impact people's lives around us; a day to celebrate the small, respectful gestures we make in order to help someone else. So take time today to reflect on the many small things you do consistently at work that contribute to a rocking, more positive, and ultimately, more fun workplace. And tomorrow is World Compliment Day, so spread the word in your workplace and have everyone in your office compliment each other tomorrow (or make this a once-a-month theme day) in ridiculously exaggerated ways (so it's way more fun) to remind everyone of the importance of both giving compliments and receiving compliments with grace and humility.
