Inviting Play Into Your Workplace |

A study led by Adam Miklosi found that dogs can teach us a little something about the effectiveness of humor as a stress-buster. The study measured levels of the stress hormone cortisol before and after the dogs played, examining two different groups of working dogs: German shepherds who worked for the Hungarian police and German shepherds who worked at Hungarian border crossings. The results, surprisingly, were quite different. The police dogs’ stress
levels rose, whereas the border-crossing dogs’ cortisol levels decreased. Why?
It turns out the dogs worked in two very different cultures with different styles of play. Whereas the police commanded their dogs to play, the border guards engaged their dogs in voluntary play. An important lesson, perhaps, for us two-legged workers!
Make sure everyone on your team has an equal and fair opportunity to engage in fun events at work, but be wary of making fun mandatory. Forcing people to have fun at work against their will reminds me of the old poster, "Morale will improve once the beatings have stopped."

Mike's Fun at Work Tip |

The Canadian humorist Arthur Black recently passed away. On his CBC radio show, Black turned the postal code for letter-writers into a memorable phrase, so the CBC postal code M5W 1E6 became, "Make 5 wieners, I'll eat 6." So try this in your workplace: Have a contest to see who can turn your postal/zip code into a memorable phrase that you could even start using with customers.

- AwkWalk: When you say goodbye to someone and then awkwardly walk in the same direction.
- Bet Lag: That creeping feeling you were wrong immediately after making a bet.
- Ringxiety: That sensation that your phone is vibrating in your pocket, when it’s actually not at all.
- Instagret: When you can’t decide whether to take a photo of something beautiful, or just enjoy the moment.
- FlopFlip: That moment when you put the milk in the cupboard and the cereal in the fridge, or any similar scenario.
