      Color Me Inspired

It's another snow-blown edition of random musings and ideas...
  • What's the most important quality in a creative businessperson? The top-3 answers in a Fast Company survey: Willing to kill ideas they love (35%); easy to collaborate with (29%); fast idea-generator (28%).
  • It's the simple things that can make a difference to your customers - such as a clothing store dressing room with three places to hang prospective outfits: One labelled NEVER, one labelled PERHAPS, one labeled OH YEAH BABY!
  • UBC researchers found that women can lower their level of stress by smelling their partner's t-shirt before a stressful event. Okay then. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that many of you have alternative means of lowering your stress?
  • Whenever you implement a cost-cutting or revenue-generating measure at work always explain exactly what you plan to do with the extra money to get better buy-in from employees.
  • I love the clarity and simple language used in IMC's core value poster that hangs in their lobby: 1. Be dedicated to customer service; 2. Be an evangelist for IMC; 3. Take initiative and get it done!

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

One of my clients does a very simple theme day once a month called "Color Me ____Day." They spin a wheel with colors on it to add an element of fun and randomness into the mix, and whichever color the arrow lands on, everyone has to wear something that color for the upcoming theme day to whichever extent they wish. Prizes are awarded for the "Purplest/Greenest/Whateverest Employee."

    Quote of the Week

“Every single human being, regardless of which generation they belong to, wants the same thing in the workplace – we want to be treated with respect, we want to have a sense of meaning and impact, and we want our boss to just leave us alone so we can get our work done.” Lazslo Bock, former senior Vice President of People Operations at Google, Inc.
