  It's another pumpkin-infused edition of random ideas and musings...
  • Look for ways to pull a "humor u-turn" by flipping a negative into a positive, like the pizza shop with the sandwich board out front reading: "Come try our pizza that one guy on Trip Advisor said was the worst pizza he had in his life!"
  • According to the book, The Happiness Equation, 90% of our happiness isn't based on what's happening in the world - it's based on how we see the world. And specific actions we take to improve our happiness have four times the effect on our happiness than anything happening in our life.
  • Calgary-based WestJet Airlines has a dedicated staff for "team care" that helps facilitate around 220 celebrations each year - all part of their effort to ensure team members feel valued.  
  • A study conducted at a Florida Ford dealership found that how salespeople talked to customers made very little difference in the sales outcome - it was how well the salespeople listened that mattered. Similarly, in a study of financial planners, effective listeners were better able to minimize their customers' perceptions of financial risk. The better listeners were also rated higher on trust, quality, and satisfaction and were more likely to get referrals from their customers, leading to higher sales. (And by the way, everybody is in sales!)
  • Employees who intentionally blocked off one hour of focused time a day with no distractions (including absolutely no e-mail or internet access) reported feeling significantly happier, more productive, and less stressed out than their counterparts.
  • As his way of showing that he was "eating humble pie," a sales manager told me how he would hand-deliver a pie to customers' homes when his company had made a mistake. Fabulous idea.

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip
 
Last year I wrote about using the Wheel of Change concept as a way of framing discussions around your workplace culture. I've noticed in several workshops that when you apply the same concept but use the word 'fun', teams come up with very different responses, so try applying the Wheel of Change to the idea of having more fun at work, as an individual or team:

1. What do I/we need to create/add/invent to make the workplace more fun?
2. What do I/we need to eliminate at work that is getting in the way of having fun?  
3. What do I/we need to accept, even though we know it's not very fun? 
4. What do I/we need to make sure we preserve/keep doing when it comes to having fun at work?
