  Ah yes, September has arrived. For some of us who have a lighter schedule in the summer, it means getting back to work. Real work. Which makes me think of the chicken and egg relationship between productivity and happiness. Studies suggest that the happier you are the more productive you are, and the more productive you are, the happier you are - it feels good when you get things accomplished in a focused way.

Kevin Kruse, the author of 15 Secrets Successful People Know About Time Management, researched the productivity habits of thousands of highly successful people across a range of disciplines. Here are a few of their productivity habits:
  • They don't create to-do lists, instead they schedule every action item into their calendar.
  • They have a consistent morning ritual.
  • They check e-mail no more than three times a day.
  • They say "'no" a lot. They say "no" in order to have the time to say "yes" to the things that really matter.
  • They set daily priorities and set aside two hours each morning for their single most important task.
  • They create work themes for different days of the week.
  • They use a notebook to capture everything so their mind stays clutter-free.
  • They only touch minor things once.
  • They batch their work to get more done - grouping similar items in a blocked off chunk of time with no distractions to interrupt them.
