How to Turn Anxiety Into Positive Action |
Here are two interesting ideas on how to overcome anxiety from the fabulous Adam Grant book, Originals: How Non-Conformists Move the World.
1. Contrary to popular belief, more and more research reveals that being a "defensive pessimist" may be a better approach for achieving success. In several studies defensive pessimists who imagined a bad performance performed better at a range of activities (including math tests and darts) than people who focused on either relaxing or picturing a flawless performance. Defensive pessimists consider the worst case scenarios so that they can plan for them and convert their anxiety
into positive motivation and action. They don't become crippled with fear precisely because defensive pessimist have imagined the worse case scenario - it gives them a sense of confidence knowing they've thought everything through carefully.
2. It sounds rather simplistic, but several studies have demonstrated that when you are feeling stressed out or anxious, rather than trying to put the brakes on those negative emotions it's easier and more effective to convert a strong emotion into a different strong emotion, but one that propels your forward rather than slows you down. For example, when people in one experiment rephrased their thinking from "I'm so anxious" to "I'm so excited" their
accuracy rate went from 53% to 80%. According to Quiet author Susan Cain, this simple mindset shift helps you move forward despite any fear or anxiety.
