Why Not Make Every Day a Yay Day?

More random musings, thoughts and ideas...
  • One of my clients holds a meeting every four months with the theme: "What's Driving You Crazy at Work?" They use the meetings to raise awareness of things that aren't working and to brainstorm solutions - with a focus on brainstorming, not blame-storming.
  • From the book, "Abolishing Performance Appraisals," 98% of employees rate themselves in the top 1/2 in terms of their performance, 80% rate themselves in the top 25%!
  • The secret to Zingerman's restaurants (Ann Arbor, Michigan) phenomenal success is simple: "We treat our employees like customers and we encourage our employees to treat each other like customers."
  • A Gallup survey divided employees into three income levels: those making less than $36,000, $36,000 to $89,999, and those making over $90,000. They found that income levels had virtually no impact on workplace engagement scores: Roughly 30% of employees were engaged in each income category.
  • The company Text100, listed as one of the best places to work in New York City, offers employees two "duvet days" a year where they can stay home simply because they feel like hunkering down under a duvet all day; the outdoor adventure retail company REI offers employees two "Yay Days" annually to allow them to hit the ski slopes or go on a hike.
  • Marriott Hotels is yet another company that finds enormous value in holding daily, standing up team huddles. The GM and hotel staff identify a "theme of the day" revolving around something that needs some focus and each meeting ends with the question, "What tools do you need to get your work done or to do your job more effectively?"

Some more accidental humor: Is this really the kind of help you need!?

Sign on a Virginia grocery store: "Now hiring - two part-time perishable clerks."

Help wanted ad: "Seeking laborers, equipment operators, and dumb truck drivers"

Help wanted: Animal Hospital is seeking an assistant: Must be flexible, reliable and irresponsible.

And from a job interview...
Interviewer: "We've narrowed it down to just two candidates, so why should we hire you?"
Candidate: "How would I know? I've never met the other guy!"
