Make Halloween at Work a Treat, Not a Trick

According to a survey by Glassdoor Talent Solutions, 59% of employees feel doing something fun at the office for Halloween is good for morale. But here’s the tricky part. Some people love Halloween; some people really hate it. And although most employees are fine with decorating the office or bringing treats into work, according to the Glassdoor survey only 6% of employees enjoy bobbing for apples and only 11% would enjoy a costume parade around the office. Halloween is a great reminder of a universal principle we should apply when it comes to fun activities in the workplace: Always give everyone an equal opportunity to participate in any of your fun workplace activities, but without forcing them to participate. Forcing people to have fun is akin to saying, “The beatings will stop once morale has improved.”

So if bobbing for apples doesn’t work for your team, consider an activity to raise money for a children’s charity. Or invite children to trick or treat at your workplace - Beryl – a 24/7 health care call center – invites all their employees' children (more than 500!) to trick or treat at their headquarters. Or hold a contest where teams compete with another to dress in a way that best demonstrates their company spirit. Or hold a trick or treat contest where employees must perform a “stupid human trick” in exchange for a fun treat. Or if you’re brave, try what one bank does and turn Halloween into a “dress your co-worker” day! (Of course, that could be the scariest Halloween of all time...)

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

I was at a restaurant recently where the menu featured a welcome message from one of the wait staff, another message from the chef, and a third message from the restaurant owner. The brief welcome messages were humorous and conversational, they added a nice personal touch, and they put names and faces to people that often remain anonymous. So is there a way your business could add some personal welcome messages from employees in your office or on your website?
