Working on Purpose |
|
|
|
I love this mission statement from a Danish bank: "We will create the kind of workplace where employees look forward to coming into work every day and are proud to tell others where they work." Their purpose statement is a great reminder that everyone has a role to play, not just serving the customer or doing their
particular job, but also in contributing to the kind of workplace where everyone wants to work. Every organization should create a purpose statement similar to this, communicate it relentlessly, and celebrate employees and teams that contribute to building a rocking great culture.
It's also a reminder that there is more than one way to derive a sense of purpose from work. An international Mercer survey from 2013 found that having a sense of purpose is one of the key ingredients when it comes to feeling engaged. So not only can you get a sense of purpose and satisfaction from your organization's overall mission, but from the work your team does contributing to the community, improving the lives of your customers, supporting each others families, and by
contributing to an inspiring workplace culture.

Mike's Fun at Work Tip |

Attaching a fun reward to the things that stress you out is a simple but effective way to help you cope with stress and keep your sense of
humor. And if you're JetBlue, you can even get creative and figure out a way of gaining some free PR by rewarding customers for a common source of flying stress - the dreaded crying baby. As a fun Mother's Day promotion, JetBlue offered a special flight where people could actually look forward to the sound of a crying baby, because each time a baby cried all the passengers aboard the flight received 25% off their next flight. By the time the New York to Los Angeles flight was
completed, four babies had wailed away, meaning every passenger earned a reward of a free return flight! How can you reward your customers for their stress?

It's a Wacky World |
|
As our thoughts in Canada continue to be with the residents of Fort McMurray and the devastating wildfires, it's nice to hear reports of people finding some humor in the situation to help them cope. One way people have kept their sense of humor is by posting photos of the strangest things they packed when they fled their homes, items such as: snow pants, swimsuits but no underwear, three bags of candy but no socks, hammocks, rice cookers and yes, skydiving gear. The humorous
photos and postings of "maybe what NOT to bring when you flee your home" have given some evacuated residents a much needed laugh.
