The Good, The Okay, and The Ugh-ly

Face it - there are always parts of your job that you're not going to be crazy about, that's a given. But here's a simple team exercise to at least take a stab at minimizing the "ugh-ly" parts of your work. Have a team meeting where everyone writes down the parts of their job they most enjoy, the parts that they find just okay, and the parts they really dislike. Sharing everyone's favorite parts of work can be highly motivating because it reminds everyone of the good stuff and reminds everyone to be grateful for the good parts. The second reason to do this is (and this has happened when I've led teams through the exercise) is to see if there is any potential for rejigging duties at a team level - you'd be amazed at how often a colleague loves doing what you hate doing - so if there are creative ways of swapping certain duties, then this exercise can function as a bit of a "chore swap."

And the third reason to do this: by sharing the "ugh" parts of your work at a team level, you might raise issues that other colleagues can offer solutions to that will help minimize the ughly-ness. It may even be something a colleague is inadvertently doing that's contributing to the stress related to that piece of your work. And by bringing it up at a team level you can also use the opportunity to brainstorm creative solutions to make the ugh-ly parts a little more attractive.
