When Money Really Can Buy Happiness

Boosting your happiness is as easy as one, two, three:

1. I've lost track of the number of studies that show that if you want to get the biggest happiness boost from your hard earned paychecks, it pays to spend your money on experiences, rather than material possessions. Going on a vacation, eating out, taking tuba lessons, or taking in a play offer far greater returns on happiness than buying material possessions - all the research is crystal clear on this.

2. Research spearheaded by Elizabeth Dunn at the University of British Columbia looked into the relationship between income, spending, and happiness. Her research has demonstrated time and time again that people who spend a higher percentage of their income on other people are far happier than those who spend it on themselves.

3. Research by Sonja Lyubomirsky and her colleagues found that when people performed five simple non-financial acts of kindness a week (writing a thank you card, donating blood etc.) over the course of six weeks their happiness levels increased, some by as much as an astounding 40%!

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

I've had several audience members over the years share their most effective workplace stress-busting techniques with me, and one technique that often comes up is this: They reframe stressful events at work or during their daily commute by imagining they are the star in their own sitcom, surrounded by assorted colorful characters - their co-stars in the sitcom. It may sound trite, but people tell me time and time again it works. It helps distance them from the crazy events around them and it helps them laugh and be curious instead of stressed out and critical. And by looking at their sometimes frustrating colleagues as colorful sitcom co-stars, they even grow to appreciate their quirky behaviors rather than stew over them.

So...I'm guessing this employer has had some trouble with past employees...they're definitely setting the bar low with this help wanted ad:

Help Wanted: Local pallet-maker needs employees. Please do not apply if you oversleep, have no car, have no babysitter every day, experience flat tires every week, or leave early for probation meetings. Must be able to work and talk at the same time.
