There's No Excuse for a Dysfunctional Workplace

May the fourth be with you!

I always stress the importance of everyone stepping up and taking responsibility at work for how they add to their culture and contribute to a positive work environment. It's actually the entire reason I wrote The Jerk-Free Workplace!

Considering that one study found that every encounter with a "fun-sucker" reduces a person's chances of being happy by 7%, it's important that everyone consider how they might contribute to a more positive, collaborative workplace.

Moreover, a recent survey by CapRelo found that
one in four respondents left their job because of a co-worker, citing passive aggressive behavior by a colleague as the #1 most offensive trait. Other annoying traits that cause employees to leave for greener, friendlier pastures include:

- Making excuses (18%)
- A sense of entitlement (15%)
- Gossiping (15%)
- Being a control freak (14%)

Share these survey results with colleagues as a reminder to be more aware of their behavior and hold regular "good neighbor meetings" to share ideas on how everyone can contribute to a more inspiring workplace.

Do any of these behaviors drive you batty? Please let me know what co-worker behavior or trait would most likely cause you to jump ship in your workplace?

Thank you Waldo Berg for the inspiration for this one! Hold a contest in your workplace to come up with the best collective noun to describe a group of your colleagues, based either on your profession or your company, as in a "knot of toads," "murder of crows," or a "cackle of hyenas." Waldo sent me examples submitted to NPR's "Car Talk" radio program that included such fabulous entries as a Staph of Doctors and a Clog of Plumbers. Please send any creative suggestions my way and I'll post a list of them on my website! rule1

The Awkward Ride: You ignore this menu completely, then we will sit in silence for the remainder of the ride.

The Funny Ride: I tell you jokes or entertaining stories from my life.

The Creepy Ride: I don't say anything but I keep staring at you in the rear view mirror.

The Karaoke Ride: We rock out to hits from the 80s, early 2000s or literally whatever you want.

The Bubbles Ride: We blow bubbles the whole time.

The Small Talk Ride: We talk about how crazy the weather's been lately and I ask if you caught the game last night.
