What Would Make You Stick Around? |
|
|
|
If you're seriously thinking about moving on to greener pastures because you're unhappy at work, don't leave without giving your employers a chance to make changes to your workplace. If you don't speak up, you're doing a disservice to you, your employers, and to your fellow colleagues.
And if you are a manager don't wait until the horse (and please don't think of your employees as horses) has left the proverbial barn. Exit interviews, besides being too late, are often poorly conducted and rarely reveal honest feedback.
So, instead, whether you are an employee or a manager, be proactive and schedule regular "What will keep me/you here?" interviews. Leadership expert, speaker and author Dr. David Burkus suggests discussing these five questions in a "stay interview":
1. What do you look forward to at the start of each day?
2. What are you learning in your job?
3. Why do you stay with us?
4. When did you last think about leaving?
5. How can I (as a supervisor or manager) make your job better?

Mike's Fun at Work Tip |
|
Here's a great example (thank you Justin!) as to how anything can be turned into a fun contest in your workplace. After a bird left a large, unsightly splat on one of their office windows, one of my clients decided to turn a poopy situation into something fun by creating a contest: Anyone could chip $5.00 into a pool to guess when the window washers (outside contractors) would clean the splat. The bird poop art and contest became a much
talked about conversation topic with employees and guests alike!
