    Minimizing Micro-Stressors

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the power of "micro moments" of fun at work, so now let's consider their evil nemesis: micro-stressors.

A friend recently complained about getting stressed out by his irritating text alerts that distracted him while he was trying to write. I asked him why he didn't change the alert option to a less annoying sound (hello wind chimes), shut off his phone, or physically remove it when he was writing. His response: "Oh. I hadn't thought of that." Now that might seem like obvious advice, but it's amazing how often we overlook the obvious and allow small micro-stressors to roam freely in our lives.

Micro-stressors are those small irritants that add up over the course of a day. And make no mistake, those small stressors really can have a disproportionate impact on our moods and mental health.

The good news is that micro-stressors can be remedied in micro ways, it's just a matter of taking the time to do it. Investing a bit of extra time up front can often save you months or even years of aggravating stress!

This is also an important conversation to have with your team. Talk about the small, annoying pet peeves that irritate everyone at work. Just raising awareness of those small irritants is often enough to encourage people to be more thoughtful and change their behaviors.
