Connecting the Puzzle Pieces for a Greater Sense of Purpose

It's time for another lime-infused edition of random musings and ideas!

  • Yesterday was official Talk Like William Shatner Day! This is too ridiculous to miss out on, so I urge you to create an entire theme day at work dedicated to this. Or. at. least. for one. meeting!
  • A study found that when employees think about the role their small tasks play at work, it was more meaningful for them to think about how those tasks connected to other employees' goals, rather than the company's overall purpose. Creating widgets that will combine with other teams' widgets to create a piece of art was more motivating, it turns out, than just being told you're creating widgets for a final piece of art. So, in addition to thinking about your ultimate purpose at work, focus on how your work connects to the adjacent puzzle pieces.
  • There has never been a greater need nor better time than right now to challenge all assumptions about how your workplace should function!
  • In order for executives to enter the leadership program at the software company HCL Technologies, they must submit a Failure CV which lists their biggest blunders and explains what they've learned from them. What would be on your Failure CV?
  • This Saturday is Make Up Your Own Holiday Day, so create a contest for the most appropriate and much-needed "fake holiday" in your company!
  • If you haven't downloaded your complimentary gift, "99 Pandemic Pick-Me-Uppers: Celebrating Silver Linings," please hop over to 99 Pandemic Pick-Me-Uppers. And then please share it far and wide to help spread some positivity around the world!

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

A conference used a creative approach to facilitate networking. All the coffee cups were labeled with different discussion topics such as, Strategic Planning, Innovation, Artificial Intelligence, or Sales & Marketing. Attendees grabbed their topic mug of choice and searched out like-minded coffee drinkers.

You can use a similar idea in your workplace where you hold a conversation theme day and have people wear a stick-on name tag revealing their conversation topic area of interest.

    Off-the-Wall Idea of the Week

Run into a random store, ask what year it is, then yell out, “It worked!” and run back out cheering. (Trust me, people will be so impressed.)

This truly made my day. If you need a laugh or a pick-me-upper, then you must phone this number: 707-998-8410. It's a school project where kindergartners have left recordings of motivational pep talks. Phone and you'll be prompted with the following menu:

If you're feeling mad, frustrated or nervous, press 1. If you need words of encouragement and life advice, press 2. If you need a pep talk from kindergartners, press 3. If you need to hear kids laughing with delight, press 4. For encouragement in Spanish, press 5.

And then bask in the brilliance of advice such as: "If you're feeling up high and unbalanced, think of groundhogs!"
