Happy Thoughts About Being Happier at Work

Here are some happy thoughts about being happier at work, because, well, it would be rather silly to have sad thoughts about being happier at work...

  • Research cited in Fast Company suggests we need to think about how we think about work. When studies tracked people's emotions, it turns out most people are much happier at work than they anticipate they will be during non-working times.
  • After intentionally making happiness at work a priority, the construction materials company Canpa saw a seven-fold increase in revenue, and they turned a 30% employee turnover rate into a negative turnover rate when employees who left the company returned in droves.
  • A study cited in the book Beyond Happiness found that the three most important drivers of happiness at work are a sense of control, making progress, and feeling connected to your organization.
  • One proven way to boost happiness is to break down workplace goals into smaller micro goals, to give you a more frequent sense of progress and accomplishment.
  • Intentionally taking time to anticipate fun, positive experiences and then reminisce about them afterwards makes us much happier - which is why rituals and traditions at work are oh-so important!
  • Employees who share positive news with supportive people, actively appreciate and recognize their colleagues, and who find a way to link their work to a greater sense of purpose report higher levels of happiness.
  • One of my clients has a "What Makes You Happy?" board in their office, where employees continuously post photos, upbeat stories, happy messages, and inspiring quotes. They've carried this practice through to the virtual world and now employees share what they've posted on their happiness boards set up in their home offices.

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

Create some "most likely..." awards for your workplace. The sky is the limit when it comes to fun "most likely" awards, as the software company Enplug demonstrates with their awards, including: Most Likely to Be a Secret Assassin, Most Likely to Sneak into North Korea, Most Likely to Get 3 PhDs, and Best Person to Take Home to Meet Mom. (OK, so the last one isn't a "most likely" award, but I really, really like it.)
