    Mini-Moments of Fun at Work

Friday, January 28 is official Fun at Work Day! So, try something spontaneously fun this Friday! Hold a ten-minute Zoom dance party, try some stealth disco (where you silently disco dance behind someone while being secretly recorded), or wear a Batman or Wonder Woman costume to work. (Okay, now might be a good time to point out that different people have different definitions of fun.)

You know me well enough to know that I'm going to tell you that ideally, most days should be fun at work day, which isn't to suggest every moment of every day should be a barrel of laughs. It's called work for a reason! There are many parts of our jobs that, let's face it, are about as fun as a root canal (unless you're a dentist and you find root canals oddly satisfying). We also need to give ourselves permission to have some really bad hair days at work (I recommend a maximum limit of 15 per year).

Having said that, given the physical and mental health benefits, happiness benefits, team-bonding benefits, and creativity benefits associated with fun, why not make it a goal to look for simple ways you can infuse a spirit of fun into your daily routines and look for opportunities to practice mini-moments/micro-doses of fun. It could be as simple as tossing a colleague an imaginary ball of energy as you pass by them in the hallway, playing a round of "rock-paper-scissors" to decide who has to do a coffee run, or yelling out "I'm riding shotgun" to claim a certain seat at the meeting table. Infusing your day with mini-moments of fun will have a profound impact on not just your life, but the lives of your teammates and family members as well.

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

Create a positive gossip box (or a virtual site people can upload their positive gossip to) where employees can drop in positive notes of appreciation and gratitude about their fellow teammates on an ongoing basis. Then once a month (or whenever it makes sense for you) either share the notes at a meeting, send them out in an email blast, or post them online for the world to see how fabulous you all are!
