    The Year of Workplace Culture

Whew - 2022 finally arrived! Happy new year everyone!

Several business articles recently touted 2022 as "the year of workplace culture." I would hope that every year we commit to creating healthier, more humane, and more inspiring workplaces, but yes, I happily second that motion. Let's make 2022 the year to re-imagine a better workplace - a workplace that works for everyone! A workplace that puts the health and wellness of employees, customers, families, and communities at the top of the pyramid. Here are eight ideas to help you  invest in and shift your workplace culture:

1. Create a "Re-imagining the Workplace" team of enthusiastic culture champions.

2. Assess your current cultural values: Are they still working for you? Do you need to re-imagine more meaningful values? Consider crafting a workplace value proposition to give employees a reason to want to return to your physical workplace. And dedicate time to translate your values into observable, meaningful  behaviors - only 10% of organizations take the time to do this!

3. Plan 12 monthly culture themes that every employee can rally around each month.

4. Create a virtual and physical WOW (Wall of Wins) where employees can post wins and share memorable moments as well as notes of gratitude and appreciation.

5. Create a monthly Culture Champion award.

6. Use the Wheel of Change formula and have your team commit to the following: Identify one thing everyone needs to keep doing to sustain a great culture; one thing everyone needs to stop doing; and one thing everyone needs to start doing that will have a measurable impact on your culture.

7. Commit to two culture "town halls" this year.

8. Shameless-but-well-meaning-plug alert: Invest in your employees, your career development, and your culture by enrolling members of your team in my Culture Leadership Academy online course.

We've all experienced a great reminder of the enormous impact work has on our lives, starting with our mental and physical health. Let's not waste this opportunity we've been given to reinvent how we work and let's all do our parts to create a pandemic of kindness, compassion, patience, and gratitude! I wish you all a healthy, happy, and humor-filled 2022!

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

If you're trying to keep a new year's resolution, consider exchanging outrageous bets with teammates to help hold you accountable. At Athenahealth, an employee set a goal of wanting to lose a certain amount of weight, so to help support him the rest of his teammates agreed that if he reached his goal the entire team would come to work dressed as superheroes for a day. And with the added incentive he reached his goal, and yes, his teammates donned their superhero capes in support!

Terrific advice from Betty White, who made so many of us laugh for so very long: "I just make it my business to get along with people so I can have fun. It's that simple."
