Honoring Your Workplace Veterans |
|
|
|
As we pay tribute and honor our military veterans tomorrow, it got me thinking about ways we could honor our workplace veterans - the veterans still working in our organizations as well as those that have retired. These veterans often have a wealth of knowledge and experience that we often overlook or too easily dismiss. And keep in mind, veteran employees sometimes feel
forgotten, while many retirees struggle to retain a sense of purpose in their lives. Here are a few ideas.
- Create a fun "Smilestone Wall of Fame" for employees who have passed a significant milestone working in your organization.
- Create, as many organizations have, an alumni club for retired employees.
- Record veterans' stories to capture their memories and highlights from their career.
- Tap into their wealth of knowledge for mentoring and employee training programs.
- Invite retirees to social events and include them in your volunteer charity programs.
- Invite retirees back to brainstorm on key initiatives. They'll often have a renewed and fresh perspective they can bring back to your team.
- Invite retirees back as guest speakers, virtually or in-person.
- Every March 1st celebrate "Refired, Not Retired Day" by sharing success stories of how retired employees have re-imagined their lives post-retirement.
- Be extra intentional about recognizing birthdays and checking in with retirees.
- One company has a C.O.F.C. - yup, a Cool Old Farts Club where membership is determined by a combination of years of service + age.
- Create a file or book where you collect memorable quotes from your veterans as a fun way to remember them.
- One company places small gold plaques in various quirky locations to commemorate each employee when they retire.
What about you? Do you do anything creative or fun to include and honor your workplace veterans?

Mike's Fun at Work Tip |
|
I read about a "master punner" (as punful as it may be to realize, master punners do exist) who played a game with a grocery bagging coworker, where they had to organically weave a certain "word of the day" into their conversations with customers in such a way that it made sense. So, why not try this in a meeting, or for an entire "Word of the Day Friday"? Make sure the
word is something you wouldn't ordinarily use (marsupial, squeegee, bowling, kumquat etc.) and award a prize for whoever makes the most logical uses of the word during a meeting or use the honor system to tally scores at the end of a workday.

Accordion research, 9 out of 10 people don’t notice when you replace random words with musical instruments.

As seen on a restaurant sign:
"Remember what the valet looked like who parked your car because we do not have valet parking!"
