Some Surprising Benefits of Humor and Laughter

I know that you already know there are dozens upon dozens of fabulous reasons to put humor to work in your workplace. But here are a few more, perhaps unexpected ways, humor and laughter can help you succeed at work and in life:

1. Laughter helps jog your memory. So the next time you've lost your car keys, start laughing. You have nothing to lose...and potentially something to find!

2. A study reported in the International Group for Humor Studies found that laughter activates specialized brain circuits in people listening to laughter - resulting in a positive emotional state that mirrors the person laughing. So laughing more often just might put your colleagues in a better mood (as long as you're not laughing in annoying, hyena-like manner, I suppose).

3. Humor researcher Alice Isen found that when people experience positive mirth as brought about by humor they show improvements in a variety of cognitive and social behaviors: People become more cognitively flexible and engage in more creative problem-solving; they demonstrate more effective thinking, planning and judgement; they show higher levels of social responsibility and they become more generous!

4. It's been shown in studies time and time again that all things being equal, people who demonstrate a healthy sense of humor are considered more physically attractive.

5. A study reported in The Psychology of Humor revealed that people who were considered "high-humor people" were rated as being considerably more interesting, intelligent, admirable, cooperative, friendly and imaginative, and less cold, mean and passive!

In honor of Dave Letterman's retirement after 33 years and 4,605 top-10 lists: Think up some creative ways you can use top-10 lists in your workplace to add more humor:
- Hold a contest for the best "Top-10 Reasons Our Company Rocks" list.
- Have your customers enter a contest for the best "Top-10 Reasons You Rock" list.
- Create a "Top-10 Reasons Workplace Safety Matters" list that intersperses serious messages with fun ones.
- Open your next business presentation with a "Top-10 Reasons This Topic Matters" list.
- Steal a page from Letterman's final top-10 list where celebrities announced each item one at a time and have each member of your team deliver one item from a group Top-10 list at your next meeting.
