Workplace Resolutions for an Inspiring Year at Work

Okay...I know many of you hate the idea of New Year's resolutions, because as someone once wryly observed, "They go in one year, and out the other."  But when it comes to creating a rocking great workplace, this is the perfect time to regroup and hit the reset button. So why not make some workplace commitments (a far stronger word than either resolutions or goals, in my opinion) to one another about the kind of workplace you want to become. The kind of workplace you want to be known for. The kind of workplace that you really can recommend to your best friend as a great place to work and that really does match the hype in your help wanted ads!

To help you get the conversation started, here are some suggestions for workplace resolutions that will have the biggest impact on your workplace culture:

1. Great cultures don't happen by accident. You can't buy your culture at Costco (even if you could it'd probably be too big). So resolve to be intentional this year about building a great culture.

2. Look at what you're investing in your leadership training and development and then triple the investment (unless, of course, your investment is zero, in which case you should probably just put up the "For Sale" sign right now). The investment will more than pay for itself for years to come.

3. Forget about writing another vision statement and instead focus on nurturing visionaries in your workplace.

4. Have less meetings and more real conversations.

5. Dive deeper for great ideas. Don't just listen to the highest-paid, loudest or most eloquent voices; actively seek out the introverts, the cranks, the disenfranchised and the oddballs. It wouldn't hurt to throw your customers into that mix as well. Not to mention a few five-year-olds.

6. Recognize your unsung heroes and continually celebrate your small wins.

7. Have more fun. Even if having more fun doesn't help you achieve your goals (it likely will, by the way) what would you rather have come the end of 2014 - the same level of success and less fun, or the same level of success and more fun? Seems like an easy choice to me.  Happy 2014 everyone!

There are four things you can do to help you keep your resolutions: make a public commitment; have an accountability partner hold you, well, accountable; add fun into the mix; celebrate the milestones and small wins on a regular basis.

So create a "Resolutions/Commitments Club" in your workplace to help support, encourage, cajole and coach each other, hold each other accountable, laugh together, and celebrate accomplishments as a team.
