Mission: Inspiring

More and more window washers around the world are dressing up as superheroes before they tackle their superhuman task at children's hospitals. Think of how this might completely redefine a window washer's mission in a fun way: rather than merely cleaning the windows they are now part of the hospital team that is helping a sick child feel better.

Instead of offering "great customer service," the fish mongers at Pike's Fish Market in Seattle are challenged to "make someone's day." Which sounds more inspiring and imaginative - to offer good customer service or make someone's day?

And a bank in Denmark by the name of Middlefart Sparekasse (oh stop it - it's not a funny name in Danish) has a very simply-worded, yet inspiring mission statement:

1. We will treat customers in such a way that they stay with us and recommend us to people who are not yet customers.
2. We will treat employees in such a way that they look forward to coming in to work every day, and are proud to tell others where they work.

So as you head into another year, how can you shake up your language or redefine your work to turn your seemingly impossible mission into Mission: Inspiring!

And on that note, I want to wish everyone a healthy, fun and inspiring 2014!

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

Before your team disperses for the holidays, gather everyone around for a year-end debriefing and have everyone share their:

1. Top three positive highlights of the year.
2. Top three things they are most grateful for.
3. Top three things they are most excited about in 2014.

It's a simple but effective way to reflect on the year, remind everyone of the great things you accomplished and get inspired for 2014.

    It's a Wacky World

A "yarn bomber" (who knew?)  in Portland, Oregon has put striped sweaters on statues of otters and dolphins and wool legwarmers and a toque on a brass deer.
