Work Bites

Time for another Work Bites Report: a listing of random work-related musings to mull over.
  • A Rochester, New York firm offered up $100 for the best ideas to cut costs. The prize went to someone who suggested they cut the award to $50. (Be careful what you ask for...and how you ask it.)
  • According to Andy Law, author of Creative Company, "pseudo cultures" happen when organizations focus on processes rather than beliefs and attitudes. Culture is not a process, but about behaving a certain way. (Are you focusing too much on process; too little on behaviors? The answer is probably yes.)
  • Surveys reveal that most employees feel a far greater loyalty to their team than they do to their organization. (What does this say about the nature of teams? Is this a good thing or a bad thing - talk amongst yourselves.)
  • Peer-to-peer accountability is the most effective form of workplace accountability. (What is your organization doing to strengthen communication between peers? Are you offering employees training in how to coach and offer constructive feedback to each other?)
  • According to the book The Future of Management, a whopping 85% of employees are not fully engaged and giving it there all. (Three questions: What does "giving it your all" actually mean? What can you learn from the top 15%'ers who are fully engaged? How much is a lack of full engagement costing your organization?)
  • Surveys suggest that many organizations spend enormous amounts of money attracting great employees, but virtually nothing to keep their employees. (I think I speak for everyone when I simply offer up a confused, tilted-dog-face expression and a hearty, "What's up with that?")
  • A study reported in Science Daily found that humor has a significant impact on organizations, particularly in three areas: enhanced creativity, increased employee cohesiveness and overall performance. (But we already knew that, didn't we?)

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

Create an official "rally around" emergency support kit designed to help out any employee facing a crisis or challenging situation at work or at home. The package should include some serious resources, but augment it with some fun morale-boosting, pick-me-upper items that will help the employee maintain their sense of humor, while showing them that everyone on the team is there for them and cares about their well-being. One of my clients has a "Rally Crew" with different employees assigned different responsibilities, including someone who is the "DJ" (Designated Jester) to help the person when they need a laugh, and several "Gophers" who help the employee with personal or work-related tasks that will help ease their stress load.

    It's a Wacky World

September is right around the corner, so you know what that means! Yup, the first week of September is official Enthusiasm Week! I think you should end every sentence with an exclamation mark just to show how darned excited you are that week!  And if you're REALLY enthusiastic, tack on an extra 4 or 5 of the little suckers!!!!!

As well, you may want to celebrate some of the following theme days:

Sept 1: Executive Toy Testing Day (check out my article on Office Toys)
Sept 5: Be Late for Something Day
Sept 6: Fight Procrastination Day (please see above)
Sept 8: Hug Your Hound Day
Sept 9: Boss/Employee Exchange Day
Sept 10: Swap Ideas Day
Sept 13: Blame Someone Else Day
Sept 16: Stay Away from Seattle Day (check)
Sept 19: Talk Like a Pirate Day! (arrr
Sept 24: Punctuation Day
Sept 27: Ask a Stupid Question Day; Walk to Work Day

For the complete list, and for ideas on how to celebrate them, cruise on over to September Wacky Theme Days
