Work Matters

A powerful sense of purpose is a compelling motivator. Studies show that teams that understand their core purpose are more effective. Meetings are more effective when people understand the purpose behind the meeting. People are far more likely to embrace change when they understand the reasons for the change. And when people have a strong sense of purpose in their work, they're more likely to view their work as a calling, as opposed to merely a job.
A simple way to help connect people on your team to a sense of purpose is to create a "Why We Work Wall" in your office: an inspiring display of phrases, images, newspaper headlines, client testimonials - anything that makes sense in your business to connect people to the end result or end user of whatever it is you do, including references to charitable organizations you contribute to and the impact your organization has on the local community.
Then create a "Why I Work Wall" where you encourage people to post words or images that connect to their unique personal reasons for working (which can also serve as a reminder that money is never the end goal.) People might post pictures of their children, the sailboat they are saving up to buy, a charity goal, or a photo of their upcoming vacation in Tahiti or Walla Walla. (I just like to say Walla Walla, I mean how can you not smile when you say Walla Walla? It's way more funny than say, Bora Bora.)
It could become a very powerful visual symbol and reminder for employees that their work matters. "The first American horse may have been a zebra." This I learned from the side of a U-Haul truck parked outside my house.
Fun facts are a simple way to add a little fun to any business. In fact, Snapple first tried putting jokes under their bottle caps, but found they had a much greater following and response when they switched to "Real Facts." Their Real Facts are listed on hundreds of websites, and get mentioned regularly on radio and TV programs, garnering Snapple loads of free advertising.
And as The U-Haul truck demonstrates, the sky is the limit when it comes to finding places to display fun facts: on your products, on a sign at the front of your store, employee lunchroom, website, on your voice mail or hold message, on the side of your airplane, back of your business card, e-mail signature, invoices, random postings around the office, tattooed on your backside...
